Tom Moyane has dominated the Twitter trends list since it was confirmed that he had been fired, with South Africans applauding the decision by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
BusinessLIVE confirmed that Moyane had been fired on Thursday.
The decision came after the Nugent Commission recommended Moyane be dismissed. The commission has been holding an inquiry into governance at the tax agency during Moyane's tenure.
Moyane earlier this week dismissed the recommendation by retired judge Robert Nugent to have him fired and said it "constitutes a thinly veiled attempt to campaign for the permanent appointment of Mr Mark Kingon, who is the acting commissioner of SARS."
The axed tax agency boss also described himself as the best commissioner in the democratic era.
