Niger has detained 100 migrants on their way to Algeria, a security source said Saturday, in a crackdown on illegal migration after 92 people died of thirst trying to cross the Sahara.

The migrants, mostly men but also some children, have been placed in police cells, the source said. Niger’s government earlier announced it had “intercepted” 47 other migrants headed for Algeria on Friday.
