The Bank of Namibia warned the public of a counterfeit bank note in Namibian currency that appeared on social media depicting president-elect Hage Geingob.

"The BoN became aware of an illegal reproduction of a fifty Namibia dollar note, depicting Prime Minister and president-elect Hage Geingob, and on the reserve side a San male person in a ND500 denomination and with a serial number," spokesman Ndangi Katoma told reporters.

The reproduction of images of the Namibian currency was a crime punishable by a fine of Namibian Dollar 100,000 or seven years' jail.

A printout of the fake bank note was shown to reporters, depicting a smiling Geingob and the words "The Native Bank of Namibia" instead of "The Bank of Namibia" on the reverse.

Those responsible were still being sought.
