UK newspaper reports Mugabe suffered a heart attack

The Zimbabwean government on Thursday denied reports that President Robert Mugabe, 91, had collapsed and died in Singapore after rumours spread rapidly about his alleged ill health. Mugabe has ruled Zimbabwe since 1980, first as prime minister then as president.

A UK newspaper has run with a report that Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe has suffered a heart attack while on holiday.

According to the The Daily Star, rumours of Mugabe suffering a heart attack are circulating.

He was said to be on holiday with family and friends when he took ill, the website reported.

While unconfirmed, the website further reports that high level meetings are being held regarding the statesman's health. 

Meanwhile Zimbabwean newspaper, The Herald, said vice president Emmerson Mnangwagwa had been appointed acting president.

The presidency had released a statement confirming this and stating Mugabe was on his traditional annual vacation. The statement was released two days ago.
