Kenyan police are investigating a video that allegedly shows officers beating what is believed to be a group of students from the University of Nairobi.
“We want to know if the video was shot at the university and [find out] how this happened,” Nairobi police commander Japheth Koome told The Star, Kenya.
Koome claimed bloggers uploaded the video in order to discredit police action.
According to the online paper, the video surfaced after demonstrations against Sonu (Students Organization of Nairobi University) chairman Babu Owino.
Owino won his seat despite the fact that his rival, Mike Jacobs, had a clear lead on all campuses by Friday evening. It is unclear exactly how Owino won.
This resulted in protests over the weekend, and students allegedly burned the Sonu office on Monday.
The protesting students say Owino has been linked to hooliganism, after a video of him attacking Jacobs surfaced.
