Third in the BioShock series and the first to eschew the underwater city of Rapture for the floating metropolis of Columbia, BioShock Infinite's new trailer contains both explosive action and period balladry.

The game is set some 50 years before events of BioShock and BioShock 2, and sees the main character board Columbia in order to recover a young woman held captive there.

Several problems present themselves, as not only is Columbia the subject of a violent struggle between rival factions, but Elizabeth is pursued by robotic bodyguards, and has developed a knack for inadvertently opening tears in the space-time continuum.

Though 2012 has not even begun, BioShock Infinite is already being tipped for prestigious annual awards, having already taken four trophies from 2011's mid-year Game Critics Awards.

Plaudits like that give it the same sort of cachet as fellow 2012 releases Grand Theft Auto V, Diablo III, and Mass Effect 3.
