A young buffalo bull has been auctioned for the record amount of R26 million at an auction in Bela-Bela, according to a report.

The bull "Horizon" is the most expensive wild animal ever sold in South Africa, and fetched R8 million more than the buffalo "Senatla", sold a year ago at a Thabazimbi auction, the Beeld reported.

Norman Adami, spokesman for the Stud Game Breeder's Association, told the newspaper that the record price was proof of people's faith in the game industry.

He said good quality game was an excellent investment, and that the industry was a sustainable one that was contributing around R10 billion to the South African economy.

Over 1000 people attended the auction at the weekend, which had a turnover of nearly R122 million.

At the same auction, a pregnant buffalo cow from Nyumbu Game was sold for R5,2 million.
