Nasa has paid tribute to Nelson Mandela, with Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield tweeting an image of Cape Town from space in tribute to the struggle icon

Hadfield tweeted this image and wrote, “Cape Town, South Africa and the South Atlantic calling to forever.”

The photo is also forms part of Nasa's photographic advent calender.

Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon tweeted "Rest in Peace Nelson Mandela. A true inspiration & role model for peace & international collaboration. We will continue to learn from him."

Elon Musk, the South African billionaire founder of SpaceX, tweeted, "Rest in peace, Nelson Mandela. A man both good and great."

Nelson Mandela died at age 95 in his Houghton home on Thursday night, surrounded by family.
