The eight South African wild dogs sent to Botswana as part of an ambitious breeding programme have arrived safely.

David Marneweck‚ of the Endangered Wildlife Trust‚ who led the transfer‚ confirmed on Monday night that the operation was successful.

All eight - who came from two KwaZulu-Natal private game reserves - are being held in a holding boma at the northern Tuli game reserve.

“They are all doing really well‚” said Marneweck.

The five females and three males were sedated at the Tembe Elephant Park and UmPhafa Private Nature Reserve in KZN at 4am on Monday‚ and then put on three flights before they were driven to the boma in northern Tuli.

They will stay there for eight weeks before‚ if all goes to plan‚ becoming the resident pack in the reserve.
