A forensic investigation should be launched into allegations that government tenders in Limpopo were set aside for premier Cassel Mathale's loyalists like Julius Malema, says the Pan Africanist Youth Congress.

"Payco calls for the Hawks, Public Protector and Auditor-General to launch a forensic investigation to allegations of unfair awarding of tenders in Limpopo's government departments and municipalities," the Pan Africanist Congress youth wing said in a statement.

"We have noticed a widespread trend that all Mathale's loyalist are having booming business ventures through government tenders whilst full-time small business people are finding it impossible to get tenders from government departments and municipalities."

The Payco statement follows reports that the ANC Youth League president benefited from government tenders of up to R140 million in Limpopo, allegedly because he was Mathale's close ally.

"The majority of young people who were told to start businesses by politicians and government officials are to this day struggling to acquire a mere R2 000 tender from government departments and municipalities, whilst ANCYL leaders, their girlfriends and relatives are exploiting all opportunities and becoming fly-by-night millionaires," it said.

Investigating processes taken to award tenders in Limpopo will help rid government departments of corruption, it said.

"It is in the spirit of transparency, openness and in pursuit of clean and corrupt-free government."
