A 25-year-old man stabbed to death in Kwanobuhle, Uitenhage last week was one of the complainants in an assault case against members of the police Tactical Response Team (TRT), Eastern Cape police said.

Lihle Menze was stabbed by the owner of the house he had allegedly broken into, Lieutenant Colonel Priscilla Naidu said.

Menze and a friend were allegedly picked up by members of the TRT on a Kwanobuhle street corner on January 15.

Naidue said the two men claimed that the TRT members assaulted them with firearms before putting them into a vehicle.

While they were being driven around they were allegedly beaten up.

They said that after some time, they were dropped off near a factory, where they approached security guards for assistance and an ambulance was called, Naidu said.

Two cases of attempted murder and a case of defeating the ends of justice were opened against TRT members.
