Several people were arrested on Thursday after barricading the N2 highway at Inyanga in Cape Town with burning tyres, says Western Cape police.

"While I do not have the numbers off-hand, I can confirm the arrest of a number of people for public violence," Warrant Officer November Filander said.

He said about 60 people had gathered in protest over poor service delivery and housing around 5.30AM.

They were believed to have been from the Crossroads informal settlement, situated near the Cape Town International Airport.

Filander said the group had dispersed but police were monitoring the area.
