What are you reading?
AS AN author of children's books, I read them in various languages for an idea of what is being written. On my adult night table I have an eclectic selection.
Because I am a 007 fan, I was disappointed to hear the latest, Carte Blanche, is not up to standard. I've gone back to the original source and am re-reading Ian Fleming's Thunderball.
In non-fiction, I've just finished John Simpson's Unreliable Sources. Marcel Pagnol's The Time Of Secrets and The Time of Love and Peter Godwin's Mukiwa are permanently on my re-read list.
In a nutshell?
Simpson traces major events around the world and discusses the way journalists commented on the events.
Why read it?
He argues that reporting is an art form and not a science, and the news we get is one version of what really happened.
Pagnol because they are set in the sunny part of Europe.
I relate to Godwin's stories because of my own forced emigration from my country of birth [Czech Republic].
