Four Eskom executives, including CEO Brian Dames, and two pilots survived a helicopter crash yesterday morning.
Dames was travelling with divisional executive Steve Lennon, acting divisional executive Louis Maleka, senior manager Kerseri Pather and two pilots from Johannesburg to the Naledi substation in Groblersdal, Mpumalanga, when their helicopter crashed onto a landing strip soon after 10am.
Eskom spokesman Hilary Joffe said details of the cause of the accident were still unclear, but that a thorough investigation would be conducted in conjunction with the Civil Aviation Authority to establish what had led to the crash.
"The accident happened as they were coming to land. There were no serious injuries," Joffe said.
She said Eskom had its own helicopters, but that the one involved in the crash was a private charter.
Netcare 911 spokesman Jeff Wicks said: "All six occupants managed to escape before the helicopter caught fire." The men were treated at the scene.
In 2007 an Eskom employee died when a helicopter used to take pictures for the utility crashed in Germiston.
