Gauteng police have arrested six men with possible links to about 50 house robberies near Sandton, they said on Thursday.

Security guards in Morningside saw men loitering near rubbish bins on Tuesday, Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said in a statement.

When the guards approached the men they fled, but one was caught and taken in for questioning.

He told the police that the rest of his gang could be found in Hillbrow.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, police arrested five more men, aged between 26 and 32.

"Police also followed up on information to Alexandra where stolen property which included jewellery, cellphones, foreign currency and SIM cards were recovered," Mogale said.

She said the men were believed to be linked to house robberies committed in Morningside, Riverclub and Bryanston since June last year.

The modus operandi in the robberies appeared to be the same, she said.

Mogale said more arrests were expected.

The six men were expected to appear soon in the Randburg Magistrate's Court.
