A councillor in the Moses Kotane municipality in Mogwase outside Rustenburg, has appeared in court for alleged stock theft, North West police said on Tuesday.

Captain Adele Myburgh said Ezekiel Mashimo, 57, appeared in the Mogwase Magistrate's Court on Monday.

He was released on bail of R1000 and the matter was postponed until January 31.

Mashimo is a proportional representative councillor for the African National Congress and owns a butchery in Ramokokastad.

He was arrested on Friday, along with five other men, for allegedly stealing cattle.
