Cosatu is dealing with divisions within its ranks, its general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said on Thursday.
The Congress of SA Trade Unions' central executive committee had spent considerable time in the past two days discussing the issue of building political unity, he said.
"We have slipped up on the question of unity and we are confronting it. We wanted to take this head-on and not sweep anything under the carpet."
Vavi told reporters in Johannesburg that leaders were not united in what they were saying.
"It's time to call a spade a spade and confront one another as leadership and ask why we are seemingly moving in different directions."
Cosatu president Sdumo Dlamini said some leaders in the organisation were pre-empting certain discussions.
There were also character assassinations which were damaging Cosatu, he said.
