A case of culpable homicide was being investigated after a police van hit and killed two cyclists, according to a report on Tuesday.

Beeld newspaper identified the cyclists, who were on a tandem bicycle, as Hendry Raats, 53, a manager at Sasol, and Thereza Kruger, 48, an accountant. Both were from Alberton, south of Johannesburg.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Happy Nape said the police van was from the Kliprivier police station. Its station commander, Superintendent Eddie Bennett, said: "We are investigating a case of culpable homicide."

The accident happened on Monday on the R550 in Kliprivier.

Kruger is survived by her husband and three children, aged 28, 25 and 17, while Raats, who is divorced, is survived by two sons in their 20s.
