Serb fugitive Dobrosav Gavric's lawyers claim that the convicted assassin poses no danger and heavily armed policemen are not needed to escort him to court.

Gavric, 38, who was a member of his country's special forces, is facing extradition. The Serbian authorities issued an extradition warrant for him to serve a 35-year sentence for three murders.

Advocate Pete Mihalik told the Cape Town Magistrate's Court yesterday during Gavric' s bail hearing that he intended to apply for political asylum.

Mihalik grilled the investigating officer, Captain Paul Hendrikse, about the presence of "policemen with machine guns and helmets" in court.

"It is an attempt to create an atmosphere of how dangerous my client is . you drove him around without handcuffs. Now the bail application starts, you create this impression," said Mihalik.

Hendrikse said he was following orders.

"Even after he was informed that he was going to be arrested for this extradition he walked into your offices," said Mihalik.

Hendrikse testified earlier this week that the Serb was linked to underworld figures in Cape Town, including Jerome Booysen, alleged to be the leader of the notorious Sexy Boys gang.

Gavric was driving Cyril Beeka when hitmen shot and killed the underworld figure in March.
