Serb fugitive Dobrosav Gavric's bid to be granted asylum in South Africa to avoid being extraditedto his home country to serve time for murder has been plagued by delay.

The 38-year-old Gavric, who was sentenced in Serbia in his absence to 35 years for three murders in 2000, intends to apply for political asylum in South Africa.

Gavric - who has been living in South Africa under the name Sasa Kovacevic since 2007 - was arrested in December after Serbian authorities issued an extradition warrant for him.

His bail application continues in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court tomorrow.

Gavric's lawyer, Juan Smuts, is "unhappy" about the delay and wants to fast-track the asylum application.

"It delays the process a little bit but, unfortunately, that's the system and what I have been told is that they can only accommodate us on Thursday," said Smuts.

"That is not what the investigating officer undertook to do. The arrangement was that he would be taken to the refugee offices the same day or the following morning. I'm going to try to fast-track that because I'm not happy about the delay."

The court heard last week that Gavric was linked to underworld figures in Cape Town, including Jerome Booysen - allegedly the leader of the notorious Sexy Boys gang.

Gavric was driving underworld figure Cyril Beeka when Beeka was shot dead in March. Gavric sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.
