Two men died in two fires in Cape Town over the weekend, the city's disaster management centre said on Sunday.

A 37-year-old man was burnt beyond recognition when a backyard structure was destroyed in Nqgawu Street, Khayelitsha on Sunday, spokesman Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said.

The second man died on Saturday, when his shack was destroyed by a fire in the New Rest informal settlement, off Klipfontein Road, Nyanga.

"The circumstances regarding these incidents are unconfirmed. The identity of the victims has not been made known."

The police opened inquest dockets to investigate both fires.
