Three men have appeared in court in connection with a man who was killed after going to meet apparent buyers of his BMW, it was reported.

The Cape Times reported that Rameez Felix, 29, Jason Elias, 25, and Shawaal Staggie, 30, appeared in Mitchells Plain Magistrate's Court on Monday on a charge of murder.

Further charges of kidnapping, hijacking and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition would be added. Their case was postponed to September 10.

They are accused of killing Olwyn Cowley, 21, whom they contacted through classifieds website Gumtree.

He met the buyers around 5.30pm on Thursday at a petrol station in Century City. His family tried phoning his cellphone after that but the calls were rejected.

Cowley's body was found at Monwabisi beach on Friday with two bullet wounds to the head. His silver BMW 325 TI was later found in Mitchells Plain.

The men were arrested on Sunday. A fourth suspect was still on the run.
