Q&A: Marianne Fassler

09 October 2012 - 02:13 By Pearl Boshomane

What are you currently reading?

I am reading The Hare with Amber Eyes by Edmund de Waal, an extraordinary true story.

What was the first book that made an impression on you?

As a girl I read the Children's Encyclopaedia word for word .

Which author would you most like to have at your dinner table?

Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I imagine he would love his food, wine and, of course, the women at the table.

Which books do you wish you had written?

I identify with women authors. So, it would be Barbara Kingsolver's Poisonwood Bible, Chimamanda Adichie's Purple Hibiscus and Anne Michaels' Fugitive Pieces.

Best feel-good novels?

Patrick Conroy ( Prince of Tides ), Thomas Hardy (anything and everything he wrote), Donna Tart ( The Secret History ) and Tom Wolfe ( Bonfire of the Vanities ) are epic.

Have you ever learnt a lesson from a book?

Yes, Ben Okri taught me a lot about the spirit world and about how Africa changes everything about you.

If your designs were a literary genre, which would they be and why?

They would be a bit like a compilation of short stories by Marquez and Okri. I love the magical realism that makes it possible to experience anything. -
