The festive season is behind us, which is bad because it means less lazing about and more work. But it's also good because you're no longer in the company of relatives you don't like.

Best of all, the end of the festive season means all that horrible, cheesy festive television we've been bombarded with has now died a swift death. And no more reruns of Dinner for One.

If last year was anything to go by, 2013 is going to be a bumper year for television. US journalists have noted some trends we can look forward to, with two worth mentioning.

First, we should expect more horror and supernatural shows. With the CW's Supernatural enjoying massive success season after season, and now with FX's American Horror Story becoming a hot favourite, it's only natural that the networks would scramble to bring audiences more freaky content.

One that stands out is Hannibal , which stars Casino Royale villain Mads Mikkelsen as the titular character.

The NBC show is based on the Thomas Harris novels and, according to its executive producer, it takes a page from the book of Hitchcock-style suspense.

It's been rumoured that Jonathan Rhys Meyers will return to TV in a show about Count Dracula, but the series is only in the developmental stage.

Another hot TV trend is that of the redneck reality show.

Apparently, people are moving on from the Real Housewives and want more hillbillies instead.

TLC will have a new reality show called Welcome to Myrtle Manor, which is about life in a trailer park.

This is the same network that brought us last year's Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, about a six-year-old aspiring pageant queen and her family in rural Georgia.

Honey Boo Boo was a huge hit overseas but for some reason it still hasn't been aired in South Africa.

Pity, because I'd love to hear Honey Boo Boo say, as she did in a CNN interview: ''You'd better redneckognise!''

The Kardashians had better watch out because their poorer cousins are gunning for reality TV glory.

They had better ''redneckognise'' that.
