Inmates at the Groenpunt prison in Deneysville, Free State, set part of the facility on fire on Monday, correctional services said.

"A unit in the maximum security section of the prison has been set on fire by prisoners," deputy regional commissioner Grace Molatedi said.

Prison officials called her around 5pm to say there was a fire. She was on her way to the scene.

Further details were not immediately available.
