Romantic comedy Fanie Fourie's Lobola, which opens in cinemas on March1, has won the Audience Choice award at the second annual Jozi Film Festival, held at the weekend.

The film tells the tale of an Afrikaans guy and a Zulu girl who fall in love and have to navigate their way through the complicated process of lobola.

The film's producers said yesterday: "We are delighted that the film received such a special accolade. It's an acknowledgement of how clever and contemporary the story is."

Twenty-three films were up for the award.

Directed by Henk Pretorius (Bakgat!, and Bakgat!2), Fanie Fourie's Lobola stars newcomer Zethu Dlomo as Dinky and Eduan van Jaarsveld (Triomf) as the affable Fanie.

The film is the first from Once Upon a Story, a script development initiative that aims to bring South African stories to the big screen.
