Local police action-comedy Blitz Patrollie - featuring stand-up comedians David Kau, Joey Rasdien and Kagiso Lediga - will be screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival next month, it was announced yesterday.

The movie will be officially released in South Africa on May 10 and screened at the international film festival seven days later.

Though Lediga and Kau, and producers Isaac Mogajane and John Volmik, will be in Cannes to hobnob with influential players in the international film industry, the most important indicator for the movie's future lies back home, according to Rasdien.

"There is only one Titanic; and there is only one Avatar. For me, personally, the greater achievement is to break the box office in South Africa and have audiences say: 'There is only one Blitz Patrollie," said Rasdien.

Bums on seats "are the priority", he said.

"Cannes will always be there. In fact, it could be Toronto or Sundance, but it would be such an honour to have people buy tickets to go see it at cinemas."

The movie is about two police officers who are unfortunately stationed at the "Central" police station - the "most disordered police precinct in Johannesburg".

The pair unintentionally stumble on a massive drug haul and, as most police action-comedies go, it is one calamitous event after the other as the police come up against crafty criminals.

Should they prevail, they will claim their place in South Africa's crime-fighting history books.
