A single winning ticket for a record US Powerball lottery jackpot worth $590.5-million (R5.4-billion) has been sold in Florida, USA.

So far there was no immediate word about who has won one of the largest jackpots.

The winner or winners had not come forward as of yesterday morning, said Connie Barnes, a Florida Lottery spokeswoman.

The grand prize, accumulated after two months of drawings, surpassed the previous record Powerball payoff of $587.5-million set in November last year.

The largest jackpot in US history stands at $656-million, won in the mega millions lottery last March.

That prize was split between winners in Maryland, Kansas and Illinois.

The $2 tickets for Powerball allow players to pick five numbers from 1 to 59, and a Powerball number from 1 to 35.
