Mpumalanga hawks head faces fraud charge

The head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga appeared in the Nelspruit Regional Court on Wednesday on a charge of fraud, police said.

National police spokesman Brigadier Phuti Setati said Maj-Gen Simon Mapiane was arrested on Wednesday morning, before briefly appearing in court.

He was charged with fraud relating to alleged false travel claims.

Setati could not provide details on when Mapiane would appear in court again.

"We can say that the matter would be looked into internally," he said.
