The body of a newborn baby was found burnt in Honeydew, Johannesburg on Saturday, paramedics said.

ER24 spokeswoman Vanessa Jackson said it appeared that the baby girl was dumped there on Friday night.

"What appears to be a newborn baby was dropped off at the corners of Christiaan de Wet and Beyers Naude in Honeydew, wrapped in cloth, plastic bags and then set alight," she said.

Police were called to the scene and would investigate the matter.
