Western Cape shack-dwellers will continue to suffer as temperatures drop and frost engulfs the province this week.

Heavy rains and strong winds displaced more than 28000 people across the Cape Peninsula last week. Trees were uprooted and roofs blown off in Philippi, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha.

Yesterday, Jacqueline Riet, a senior forecaster for the SA Weather Service, said the Western Cape, the Northern Cape and the Free State will be hit by a "significant drop in temperatures".

"I think widespread frost is what people will be experiencing, with the minimum temperature being below zero or in the single digits for most parts of the country," said Riet.

"Temperatures will remain cold, mostly along the coast. But for the interior there are a few areas that will have [maximum] temperatures ranging between 13C and 16C."

Riet said temperatures in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga will range between 20C and 24C.
