Kwaito star Kabelo Mabalane of TKZee fame once weighed 104kg. Seven years later, with seven Comrades Marathons under his belt and a svelte 75kg, he is helping South Africans lose weight.

The performer, also known as Bouga Luv, is working on a show called Kabelo's Boot Camp for the new DStv channel Mzansi Wethu.

The channel called this week for prospective contestants to send in their details by e-mail kabelosbootcamp@connect.tv.

No further details of the show have been released by the channel, but Mabalane said all the contestants would work towards one goal: to lose the highest percentage of weight possible.

The winner will have undergone the greatest transformation.

"We will take a look at the individual holistically, their weight loss and even overall attitude."

Mabalane stressed that contestants be keen to "change their lives" by stopping bad habits and losing weight. People able to take time off work to participate in the recording of the show would be given priority.

The Amapantsula Ajabulile star added: "I've got to a point where I've practised certain principles for sustained periods and they have worked for me and I know without a shadow of a doubt that, should they [contestants] apply them, they will experience transformation."

Earlier this year, the South African Institute of Race Relations said a third of all South African women were obese, and less than one-tenth of South African men were obese. In October 2011, the food services company Compass Group Southern Africa placed South Africa third in the world obesity rankings, behind the US and the UK.

Mabalane, who finished the recent Comrades in a time of eight hours and 13 minutes, said he would aim to trim that time by an hour for next year's race.

Though he is on a three-week break from running, he is following a specific diet plan to help him lay a good base for when training resumes.
