There is hope for insomnia sufferers, thanks to a bedside device that monitors your blood pressure and temperature and even lulls you to sleep.

The "sleep" device is among new innovations unveiled by Cape Peninsula University of Technology students yesterday.

About 40 entrants participated in the competition this year, and only 12 were awarded.

The sleep device by Luciano Wegmershaus was among the top five.

Professor Gary Atkinson-Hope, the director of technology transfer and industrial linkages at the university, said research showed that many people struggle to sleep at night.

"One of the main reasons for that is that they are unable to unwind," said Atkinson-Hope.

"This device decides what is needed to relax you.

"It then decides what kind of film to show you on the ceiling and assesses what kind of music you will need to go to sleep."

Other ideas that made it to the top list include a study plug by Katlego Montewa.

It i s a noise-blocking headset that also gives one an acupressure massage and is meant to help students concentrate while studying.

"It applies pressure to your temples and enhances your concentration and memory span."

The finalists were awarded R7000 each.
