An 80-year-old grandmother fighting cancer has become an Instagram celebrity. Grandma Betty's account was created by her teenage great-grandson Zach Belden and has 160000 followers.

It features pictures of Grandma Betty hanging out with her family, chilling with her dog and even acting goofy - as well as videos of her dancing. Just three weeks ago the account had fewer than 3000 followers.

You can follow her on instagram.com/ grandmabetty33.

On the web

Facebook's scientists have been hard at work with their facial verification software. In a new report they have claimed the software, which allows the social media network to recognise a user's face from different angles, is 97.25% accurate. The software has been tested using the faces of celebrities, but is yet to be rolled out in the real world.

Viral video

A video clip showing the reaction of Los Angeles TV news anchor Chris Schauble and co-presenter Megan Henderson to Monday's earthquake has gone viral. The pair were in the middle of the KTLA breakfast show when the 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck. Schauble's face was momentarily frozen in shock as the studio set shook and juddered, before he and Henderson took cover under their desk.

The epicentre of the earthquake was 32km northwest of Los Angeles, at a depth of eight kilometres beneath the surface of the earth. Despite being the largest earthquake to hit the Los Angeles area since a 5.5-magnitude tremor in 2008, it caused no major damage or casualties. Yesterday the video had more than five million hits on YouTube.
