The woman who became known as Miss F during her 15-year legal tussle over a damages claim after she was raped by an off-duty police officer has finally won her battle.
Miss F was awarded R2-million by the Western Cape High Court on Friday.
Judge Shenaaz Meer awarded her R250000 in general damages and R1.76-million for medical expenses, loss of earnings and to cover her legal costs.
She had hauled Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa before the court to demand R7-million for his employee's deeds.
The court ruled four years ago that, as a minister, Mthethwa could be held liable for her rape in 1999 in the Western Cape town of George.
Miss F was 14 years old at the time of the incident.
"After 15 years I am glad that I have finality and that everything is over, so that I can now move on with my life," she said after the ruling.
Her attacker, Allister Claude van Wyk, was a police detective.
He was sentenced to 12 years in jail.
Miss F's lawyer, Brin Brody, welcomed the high court ruling.
"This is a victory for [Miss F], women's rights and the end of an eight-year battle that went to the High Court, Supreme Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court," said Brody.
