Regarding your front page story "Free water taps to be turned off" (June 25). Is this not typical of all levels of government, that they throw the baby out with the bath water rather than sorting out the inability to control billing?

"There is a deficit between the service we provide and what we are actually charging" was your pull quote. This government would rather go against the constitution than acknowledge municipalities have screwed up badly, and its only solution is to screw the consumer.

Yes, we do pay little for water, but the provision of water to all people overrides the comparison with charges from other countries.

Who will be the official who deems what consumer A will pay against consumer B? Another incompetent municipal official.

Don't do this, government. You will run the risk of creating an unfair and unconstitutional environment.

This is how our government thanks us. We vote for them and then what? No more free water for some. Who are these people? The rich, and most definitely the government workers. Expect more corruption because people will bribe the authorities so they don't pay.
