South Africans are not patriotic enough, according to ANC MP Lindiwe Michelle Maseko.

Maseko suggested that the SABC broadcast the national anthem twice a day - at 6am and noon - to foster patriotism.

Maseko said that when she was growing up in the former Bantustan of Bophuthatswana the radio and television stations played the national anthem twice a day and she believed the SABC should follow this example.

She claimed that this would strengthen social cohesion and moral regeneration.

The suggestion was slammed by several online commentators who said Maseko was disguising indoctrination as patriotism.

But Minister of Communications Faith Muthambi seemed to agree with the proposal.

Maseko's call is likely to open a debate on how patriotic we are and on what defines patriotism.
