For Atandwa Kani, October has been a bit wonky, even if it's only three days in. It started with the canning of Generations, and in 10 days he's back on our screen in a new drama series, Kowethu.

Kani plays surgeon Dr Sibu Mahlangu, who loves women and fast cars and all things high life, but is forced to abandon it all when his father, a farm owner, dies. He now has to learn about irrigation, planting mielies and milking cows.

"I think the script is nothing we've seen on our screens before."

He teased that all the characters "have a dark secret", which will cause division between some, and bring others closer.

The show was shot over six weeks and features a star-studded cast, which includes Kani's Generations colleague Thato Molamu, and Lumko Johnson, Thando Thabethe, Jo-Anne Reyneke, Wandile Molebatsi and Lali Dangazele.

Talking about switching to Dr Mahlangu from American colleague graduate Samora Lembede on Generations and a psychotic doctor on Muvhango before that, he said: "This is why we studied, isn't it? So we can learn the tools. It should be challenging."

He said actors were expected to excel in any role they are given.

The son of legendary playwright, John Kani, he took to the stage like a duck to water. "Theatre is always on my mind," he said, and the stage had not taken a back seat to TV as he will start rehearsals on a new production next month .
