State loses bid to admit emails showing that 'bisexual' Shrien Dewani was conflicted about getting married

UK cyber detective Mark Roberts who flew to Cape Town to bolster the prosecution’s case against murder accused businessman Shrien Dewani spent less than 10 minutes in the witness stand this morning.

This was after the Western Cape High Court ruled that a string of emails between Dewani and unnamed man which Roberts discovered were inadmissible evidence.

According state prosecutor Adrian Mopp, the emails, which apparently contain graphic details, prove that Dewani was conflicted about getting married. But Dewani’s counsel advocate Francois Van Zyl objected, saying that the emails were irrelevant to the case.

Western Cape deputy judge president Jeanette Traverso said Dewani’s sexuality is not in dispute and that the emails predated Anni’s death by more than a year. She dismissed the evidence.

The prosecution then excused Roberts.

Scandalous details of Dewani's sex life have been thrust into the spotlight. Last week he claimed to be bisexual and admitted to having sex with prostitutes.

But he said that when he met Anni, in May 2009, he was "instantly physically attracted" to her. Soon after, he said, they fell in love.

Yesterday Simon Johnson, who worked for Gaydar as a digital product manager and was flown in from the UK to testify for the prosecution, told the court about Dewani's website profile and his activity online.

Johnson said that between May 2009 and October 2010 - when the couple were together - Dewani received 16 messages from men online.

When Mopp asked what Dewani was listed as being interested in, Johnson said: "Dominant active guy, fairly arrogant, likes to train up young subs [submissives]".

Dewani is accused of hiring hitmen to kills his wife Anni during their honeymoon in Cape Town on November 13, 2010 in an alleged staged hijacking.

Shuttle operator Zola Tongo, who drove them around, alleged that Dewani offered him R15 000 to find hitmen to kill his wife and that he had hired Xolile Mngeni and Mzwadoda Qwabe.

Tongo and Qwabe entered into plea and sentencing agreements with the state and are serving lengthy prison sentences.
