Two men have been taken in for questioning in KwaNongoma, northern KwaZulu-Natal, over the murder of Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa.

The Times understands the men, one of whom is from Vosloorus, were detained at KwaNongoma Police Station after police confirmed that they fitted the description in the police-issued identity kits.

Shaheen Suleiman, CEO of Magma Security and Investigation, the private investigation firm hired by Meyiwa's family, said: "We are in Joburg. I cannot talk. I cannot explain anything. We are following up things."

It is believed Suleiman's 10-member team was following leads on the possible hideout of a third suspect who stood guard outside the Vosloorus, East Rand, home of Meyiwa's girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, where he was shot on Sunday night in an apparent house robbery.

A police source said: "What made police more suspicious is that one of the men had been heard saying he came from Vosloorus.

"One of them had a resemblance to the dreadlocked suspect."

The men were taken to Johannesburg at about 1am yesterday for questioning.

SABC's Ukhozi FM radio ran the story of the "arrest" yesterday afternoon but later withdrew it from its prime 6pm news slot.

Police spokesman Brigadier Neville Malila denied that anyone had been taken into custody.

"No one has been detained and the cellphone stolen during the shooting has not been recovered."

Meyiwa's father, Sam Meyiwa, speaking from the family's home in Umlazi, south of Durban, said: "I am not blaming Kelly for his death, but he died at her house. That will always lead to some sort of suspicion.

"Kelly hasn't called or made any communication with us. She ran off to the media. She was supposed to call and tell us what happened. I don't even want her around here."

The family have barred Khumalo from attending the funeral in Durban on Saturday. The grieving father said he was preparing to go to Johannesburg to fetch his son's cars and identity document.

Khumalo has been in possession of Senzo's BMW X6, which he bought a few months ago. He also has a red Golf 5.

"Uyabheda lo Kelly Khumalo [Kelly Khumalo is bad news.] If Senzo did not go to Kelly's house, he would have been still alive.

"She has no dignity whatsoever. She likes showing off but she does not realise that this is neither the time nor the place," the father said.

Preparations are under way to give Meyiwa a hero's send-off at Moses Mabida Stadium on Saturday, to which tens of thousands of mourners are expected to be ferried in a special train.

Meyiwa will be buried at the Chesterville Heroes' Acre.

A joint memorial service will be held at the Johannesburg Standard Bank Arena today for Meyiwa and 2009 men's 800m world champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, and professional welterweight boxer Phindile Mwelase.
