South African golden boy Chad Le Clos broke the world record as he won the 100m butterfly at the world short course championships in Doha last night.

Le Clos, already holder of the 200m fly world mark, led from the start and touched in 48.44sec to better the 48.48 record that had been owned by Russian Evgeny Korotyshkin since 2009.

In his wake were American Tom Shields and Australian Tommaso D'Orsogna.

Today Le Clos competes in the 50m butterfly, in which he will bid to become the first man to own the trio of records.

SA's other medal hopes yesterday - Cameron van der Burgh, Sebastien Rousseau and the 4x200m freestyle relay team - all had to settle for fourth.

Le Clos, who won gold in the 200m freestyle the night before, swam an incredible third leg in the relay as he took South Africa from fifth spot to second place.

Anchor Leith Shankland surged into the lead but faded on the final 50m, being overhauled by the US, Italy and Russia; in the end he was 17-hundredths of a second behind third place.

Van der Burgh, who had shoulder surgery in August, clocked 56.80 to miss out on bronze in the 100m breaststroke by two-hundredths of a second to Frenchman Giacomo Perez-Dortona.

This is the first time in Van der Burgh's career that he has made a final at a top international gala but not won a medal. He will have another medal shot in the 50m.

Rousseau, who swam the second leg of the 4x200m relay, was third going into the final 50m of the 400m individual medley, but he was pushed out by Kosuke Hagino of Japan, who ended second behind countryman Daiya Seto.

Rousseau was a bronze medallist in this event at the Commonwealth Games.
