A man was critically wounded in a shooting in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday afternoon, Eastern Cape police said.

The occupants of a Fiat and a Mazda opened fire on one another at a red robot in Newton Park shortly after noon on Tuesday, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said.

The white Fiat Palio was stationary at the robot when a white Mazda Etude pulled up alongside it and its occupants opened fire. The Fiat's driver reversed to try and escape.

"While reversing, one of the occupants of the Fiat got out of the vehicle and was shot multiple times."

He was taken to a local hospital in a critical condition. The occupants of the Mazda fled the scene. Police suspected the shooting was gang-related.

There were four people in the Mazda and three in the Fiat.
