Dismal weather is enough reason for any parent to excuse their child from school, just so they can have an extra day to cuddle.

But it appears most celebrity moms and dads (at least in the country's interior) managed to wean themselves off their little ones for yesterday's first day of school.

Judging by comic Tumi Morake's tweet, she barely managed to keep her composure as she watched her son Bonsu start Grade 1. She wrote: "Lord help me maintain my gangsta [look], no tears, no tears! Dropping 1st born at Big School ."

TV and radio personality Zuraida Jardin's daughter Zaria didn't seem perturbed by big school, judging by the snap they took together.

Jardine wrote on Instagram: "And just like that, it became official! My little Z's first day at big school had begun."

Kelly Khumalo's son Christian, whom she had with Jub Jub Maarohanye, grinned for a picture, while in another she wrote: "Go on son, mommy will be right here when you get back."

But it wasn't just the mommies - SA Music Awards gospel singer Sfiso Ncwane's sons, Umawenzokuhle (Grade 1) and Ngcweti (Grade 6), both grinned for the camera in their uniforms.

Ncwane wrote a sweet message for his boys, saying: "Fundani bafana [go on and learn boys], your dad never got this chance. #FowardwithEducation".

Actor Hlomla Dandala tweeted: "My babies all going to school today! #prouddad".
