A man who called his ex-girlfriend's domestic worker a "k***r" and assaulted her received correctional supervision in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Friday.
Magistrate Alta le Roux sentenced 36-year-old Andre van Deventer to house arrest for two years.
She said he would be required to complete 70 hours of community service, with a minimum of 16 hours a month. The community work would be in the service of black women.
Van Deventer, who admitted he had problems with aggression, drugs and alcohol, would also have to complete a number of programmes in this time.
These programmes addressed substance abuse, social skills and behavioural issues.
He would not be allowed to own a firearm or to use any substances.
Le Roux said he would be allowed to apply for jobs from his home and could come to an arrangement with the correctional supervision department regarding work.
Van Deventer, who was dressed in a green shirt and khaki pants, gripped the dock throughout sentencing and rushed out of the courtroom afterwards.
At the end of last year, he was found guilty of assaulting 50-year-old Gloria Kente and of spitting in her face at the Table View, Cape Town, home he shared with his then girlfriend Mariechin Pienaar in 2013.
Kente previously told the court he grabbed her pyjamas, verbally assaulted her and spat in her face.
He admitted to the crimen injuria charge, but denied assaulting her.
Le Roux said the fact that he continued to deny the assault showed he had little remorse and that this had affected her final decision.
Kente was not in court on Friday, but her lawyer said he had contacted her and she was happy with the sentence.
