Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene yesterday gave a strong indication that e-tolling is in Gauteng to stay.
And those not paying will face the wrath of the law.
The national government will help repay the R20-billion borrowed for the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Scheme.
Said Nene: "Concerns regarding the socioeconomic impact of toll tariffs have been heard, and revised monthly ceilings will shortly be proposed.
"But cost recovery from road-users will continue to be the principal financing mechanism for this major road system.
"We will include a national contribution to meeting the associated cost in the adjustments appropriation later this year. Measures will also be taken to [improve] compliance and enforcement."
Nene said: "The longer it takes to resolve the matter of e-tolls the more it becomes a burden on both Sanral and the government."
