An Irish court has inadvertently legalised certain class-A drugs after a law governing the possession of controlled substances was ruled unconstitutional.

Judges at Ireland's Court of Appeal deemed the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 to be incompatible with Irish law following a legal challenge.

The legislation had been sporadically updated to bring new substances under its provisions.

The Irish constitution states that the country's parliament has the exclusive privilege of creating new laws.

So an emergency session of parliament has had to be called to recriminalise the drugs, The Journal reported.

It is believed possession will be legal until today, when the new law might come into effect.

Drugs covered by the struck-down law included crystal meth, ketamine, MDMA and magic mushrooms.
