Question and Answer with Alex van Tonder Best line you've ever read?"I love you," from someone special.Best line you've ever written?''That's what you get for stealing people's cats!" in an angry letter to a neighbour explaining why I'd stolen his pot plants (he used to keep my cat for sleepovers). The most disappointing ending to a book?I used to hate the ending of Great Expectations when I was younger. I couldn't believe Pip and Estella ended up together after all they put each other through. But now, with age, I see it makes sense. When I don't like an ending I try and figure out what's wrong with me, not the book. The writer who made me want to be one:There are so many. Hearing Terry Pratchett talk when I was a teen was inspiring. JM Coetzee made me realise how much could be said in so few words. Jonathan Safran Foer, for being so poignant and funny.I write in:Bed, in the early mornings, with a cup of coffee and my laptop. Preferably before 6am.The best advice anyone gave me about writing:Write the book you want to read. Also: Have a lot of snacks within reaching distance. Not many people know that I:Write poetry inspired by social media. If I were allowed to take only one book with me to Mars it would be:The Idiot's Guide to Mars? Nah, maybe Catch-22 or the Tao te Ching. In the end I hope I'm remembered as:Someone who wasn't afraid to steal a pot plant to make a point.Van Tonder's debut novel, 'This One Time', is published by Pan Macmillan next month...
