Amakhosi's new chief

18 June 2015 - 02:01 By Marc Strydom and Mark Gleeson

Chairman Kaizer Motaung said his was blown away by the presentation of the man he has made the Kaizer Chiefs' new coach. Steve Komphela, who was appointed yesterday, is the first South African to be the team's permanent head coach since Sergio dos Santos more than two decades ago.Other South Africans - Nelson Dladla, Ryder Mofokeng, Trott Moloto, Wellington Manyathi, Jacob Sephoa, Doctor Khumalo and Donald Khuse among them - have served only as caretaker coaches .Motaung once famously proclaimed there was no South African coach worthy enough to lead Chiefs or Pirates, but said yesterday that this statement had been "taken out of context"."I was talking about coaches who were available at that time," he said.Chiefs' last coach, Stuart Baxter, left to join Turkish club Genclerbirligi earlier this month. Komphela seized his chance with a vengeance.Motaung said: "The presentation he gave blew me out of this world, because I don't know if many other coaches in South Africa have got the kind of skill he has."Steve has always been on the radar for us. But we also looked at the future. We know coaches from outside, sometimes development is just talk because they want the job."Komphela said Motaung told him in 2009 that he could be a future Chiefs coach."The chairman said, 'If you work hard, there's a home, an environment, a platform'," he said.Fans have their sayWe asked our readers on Facebook (and found some on Twitter) for their opinions on Komphela's appointment yesterday.Samson Chanetsa: "Komphela is capable of winning every cup, mark my words, he may even go throughout the whole year without a loss."Penuel Edgar Dladla: "He sure has the players and it will be all to him to use them correctly as Stuart did, but being the good coach he is I think he will do a good job."Donny Madon Gedaan: "It's a case of one step forward and three steps backwards because all I see is three dry seasons under Komphela's leadership. I might as well find myself another team to support for the next three years."Marshall Mamba Jr: "We're getting relegated for sure."Simangaliso Kubheka: "The appointment of Steve is welcomed joyfully by Orlando Pirates FC fans as it is merely a confirmation that the league title belongs to OPFC this coming season. It's really something that we have always known and we thank Motaung for the vote of confidence in OPFC."@MKatlegoTsele: "What David Moyes did to Man Utd, Steve Komphela is going to do the same to Kaizer Chiefs...."@Cde-Xolani: "LoL @Kaizer_Chiefs have appointed a politician, Steve Komphela, as their new coach."@Phillimongule: "I wish Steve Komphela all the luck in the world."..
