Fishing quota appeal period extended
The period for supplementary appeals on the rights allocation process has been extended to next Friday afternoon (July 17)‚ the department of agriculture‚ forestry and fisheries said in a statement Friday. The appeal process is part of a long-running saga over the department’s controversial 2013 allocation of fishing quotas. In May this year an independent inquiry found that the allocations process was flawed. The quotas were announced on December 31 of that year and an outcry followed when many fishermen found they had lost their rights.The reason given by the department for the extension was that it had taken longer than anticipated to make score sheets available at fishery control offices along the coast and on the department’s website.The appeals were to have been submitted on Monday afternoon...
