Rail agency orders qualification audit for all employees

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) is “on track” to deliver on its mandate to roll out a "modern rail system" in the country. That’s how Prasa board chairperson Popo Molefe summed up his opening statement at a briefing on Thursday morning on Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s report into maladministration‚ financial mismanagement and tender irregularities at the parastatal.Molefe said the report “is a matter of concern to the board‚ management and shareholders” of Prasa‚ but said some of the matters were already being dealt with internally.Molefe said Treasury had been requested to send a procurement officer to the agency to assist it while it was “restructuring”.He said that all contracts or payments of more than R10-million dating back to April 2014 would be reviewed and the relevant partied “consulted with”.Prasa would be “applying its discplinary code” to deal with officials who are implicated or alleged to be involved in any impropriety‚ but Molefe later added that this would not be rushed as “processes had to be followed”.All current Prasa employees would‚ however‚ be subjected to vetting as Molefe said a qualification audit would be undertaken. In July this year‚ the agency suspended its chief engineer‚ Daniel Mtimkulu‚ after allegations emerged that he had misrepresented his qualifications.Molefe said he was also awaiting the second volume of Madonsela’s report...
